What is Asbestosis?

Asbestos is the term coined for a medical condition that affects the tissue of the lungs due to an inhalation of asbestos or, exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestosis is usually the result of long term exposure to asbestos and therefore the disease is very common in those working in certain industries. It is largely considered to be an occupational lung disease for this reason. People working in the mining industry, manufacturing industry and construction industry are said to be the most at risk from asbestosis. One common symptom of asbestosis is shortness of breath. Sufferers are at a heightened risk of developing additional lung complaints and illnesses such as lung cancer and mesothemioma.

Currently there is no sure for Asbestosis although oxygen therapy is often used by sufferers to relieve the symptoms such as shortness of breath. Other treatments include respiratory physiotherapy sessions with the aim of removing secreations from the lungs and stimulate drainage.
